April Showers Bring May Flowers

It seems as though all is right with the world.  Over the last week we have been graced with Presidents Obama’s Birth Certificate, the killing of Osama Bin Laden, and 48 Hours of wall to wall royal wedding coverage.  Locally in Pleasanton the weather is great, the sun is shining, and tomorrow night is the first downtown street faire.  Later this week we will celebrate Cinco De Mayo, and Mother’s day. What could be wrong with this picture, it sure seems April showers have brought us May Flowers…

But these flowers need to be rooted in something, usually fertile soil, and I am here to tell you we have no fertilizer in fact no soil.

Tonight the nuclear plant in Fukushima Japan still has four nuclear reactors that are in various stages of melting down with no ability to stop it.  Tons of radioactive particles have been emitted into the air we breathe, the water we drink, the grass our cows eat, and the soil we plant our vegetables in.  While our newscasters jetted off to London to discuss the length of Kate’s dress, not one “real” news report was filed on Fukushima, not a word.  Tonight as I stand here my best sources still indicate Reactor #2 and #4 at 407 Degrees Fahrenheit.  Hundreds of spent nuclear fuel rods remain either exposed to air, or have been buried in a few inches of soil where they laid after massive explosions at three of the reactors. Over the last week the only tangible item that I can see being done is spraying some dust inhibitor material around the reactors and continuing to flush them with water..which then becomes radioactive, and then released..into the ocean, again, and again.  My reports indicate that the reactors are so hot and radioactive that no man or even machinery can get close to the reactors.  Our governmental departments of the EPA, (Environmental protection agency) and the USDA, whose sole purpose for existence is to protect the American peoples food supply and air we breath are essential silent on this issue.  Hundreds of other universities and state agencies have been reporting increased radiation in the air we breath, milk we drink, and from imports of fish and vegetables, but yet nothing from those two agencies.  In fact over the last 8 weeks since this accident began try to find an EPA radiation level meter that is working, or that you trust.

Maybe you think that Fukushima is to far away to affect the flowers in Pleasanton, may I then present the California Thunderstorm.

California is the poster child for the American economic collapse.  Public services are being slashed due to budget crunches, with no hope for any economic recovery; the situation in California is going to continue to degenerate as inflation steals away any savings one may have left.  The truth is that the state of California needs millions and millions of new jobs just to get back to “normal”.  For example, near the end of last year it was reported that 24.3 percent of the residents of El Centro, California were unemployed.  Not only that, as of the end of last year the number of people unemployed in the state of California was approximately equivalent to the entire populations of Nevada, New Hampshire and Vermont combined. Businesses are closing in California at an astounding pace.  At one point last year it was reported that in the area around Sacramento, there was one closed business for every six that were still open.

As a result of all of this, home prices in many areas of California have completely fallen off a cliff.  For example, the average home in Merced, California has declined in value by 63 percent over the past four years. Please take a look at these charts:

New Home Sales: this chart shows you that last month the number of New Home sales was at its lowest number EVER since data for this information began in 1963.

Median Home Prices: This chart shows you nationally that the Median home value has dropped to its lowest point since 1990..that is right those homeowner not foreclosed upon have seen their values drop to 21 year lows on average, so much for that little slogan, “you’re home is your best investment”.

Perhaps you believe that California is not representative of the flowers in Pleasanton, then may I present to you the Oakland Tsunami 15 miles down the road.

Because of extreme budget cuts and police layoffs, Oakland, Police Chief Anthony Batts has announced that there are a number of crimes that his department simply will no longer respond to due to a lack of resources.  The following is a partial list

  • burglary
  • theft
  • embezzlement
  • grand theft
  • identity theft
  • false information to peace officer
  • required to register as a sex offender

Tonight while you work hard on an agenda packed with important items such as proclaiming Older Americans month and Affordable Housing Week, perhaps you could think about some meaningful agenda items for your future meetings.  Maybe recognizing that July is the month when we celebrate our independence British royal rule and the birth of the US constitution that you all have taken an oath to defend. Or, how about proclaiming June as the month where we all agree that 2+2=4.

God Bless You

God Bless America
